Apple's Time Machine software makes it really easy to recover old versions of files, restore your Mac to an earlier version, or set up a new Mac, here's how. Mar 03, 2018 Wait, in your question, you mentioned about Mac like new Mac to old Mac etc. Macs are computers. IPads are not Macs actually. The instructions I sent are for Mac computers. It is even easy to transfer everything from your old iPad to new iPad. On the old iPad, open Settings your name iCloud and turn off Find My iPad option. Let me know once. Jun 03, 2020 If your Mac doesn't start up all the way, or you also want to restore the macOS you were using when you created the backup, follow the steps to restore both macOS and your files. When you're asked how you want to transfer your information, select the option to transfer from a Mac, Time Machine backup, or startup disk. Then click Continue.
Dec 16, 2012 My question describes quite clearly what I wanted to do. If you mean the use of the term 'migrate', which somehow you took to mean migrating a Mac to another Mac, the phrase 'how to migrate existing Time Machine backups to a new Mac' was not written by me, but by Apple in their support article, and noted, with the article pointed to by my question.
The summary of article HT1427 gives among the topics allegedly covered in the article: 'how to migrate existing Time Machine backups to a new Mac', which is exactly what I want to do. But the article says nothing whatsoever about that!! How do I do that?
I bought a new MacBook Air running the latest Mountain Lion, and moved my user files over from the old MacBook Air, which was on Snow Leopard. I have the Snow Leopard Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule that I want to inherit for my new Time Machine backups. I found some articles that indicate that the Time Machine preferences are supposed to pop up a panel (at least in Lion) with an option to 'Use Previous Disk..', followed up in the next panel with an option to 'Inherit Backup History'. (See http://www.macworld.com/article/1161421/migrate_time_machine_backup_to_new_mac_i n_lion.html ) However I can't find a way to get that first panel. All I can get is 'Select Backup Disk..', and the single option of setting up a brand new Time Machine backup on the Time Capsule. It creates a new sparsebundle there, with a ' 1' after the disk name to deconflict with the previous backup already there. Not what I want.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Migration Assistant copies all of your files to your new Mac so that you don't have to copy your files manually.
- If your files are currently on a Windows PC, follow the PC migration steps instead.
- If your new Mac is using OS X Mountain Lion v10.8 or earlier, follow the Mountain Lion migration steps instead.
Check software, settings, and power
- Install all available Apple software updates on both Mac computers. Install any updates for your third-party apps as well.
- Make sure that your old Mac is using OS X Lion or later.
- Make sure that your old Mac has a computer name: Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Sharing and check the Computer Name field.
- Connect both computers to AC power.
Connect the computers to each other
- If both computers are using macOS Sierra or later, just make sure that they're near each other and have Wi-Fi turned on. If either is using OS X El Capitan or earlier, connect them to the same network using Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Or connect them using target disk mode and the appropriate cable or adapter. Then start up your old computer in target disk mode.
- Or connect your new Mac to a Time Machine backup of your old Mac.
Use Migration Assistant

In the example above, John Appleseed is a macOS user account. If you transfer an account that has the same name as an account on your new Mac, you're asked to rename the old account or replace the one on your new Mac. If you rename, the old account appears as a separate user on your new Mac, with a separate home folder and login. If you replace, the old account overwrites the account on your new Mac, including everything in its home folder.

After Migration Assistant is done, log in to the migrated account on your new Mac to see its files. If you're not keeping your old Mac, learn what to do before you sell, give away, or trade in your old Mac.
